Ngày nay, bệnh nhân mắc các triệu chứng của bệnh truyền nhiễm như nhiễm trùng huyết, bệnh giống cúm, sốt phát ban hoặc viêm màng não, thường được điều trị khá giống nhau: Bằng cách lấy mẫu bệnh phẩm gửi đi phân tích trong phòng thí nghiệm, bắt đầu liệu pháp kháng sinh cùng với việc bác sĩ đoán nguyên nhân gây bệnh, và sau đó hy vọng biết được nguyên nhân gây nhiễm trùng trong một khoảng thời gian phân tích kết quả từ phòng thí nghiệm.

Các phương pháp chẩn đoán mới được yêu cầu cho phép bác sĩ phân biệt nhanh tại chỗ giữa bệnh nhân cần dùng kháng sinh và bệnh nhân được điều trị tốt mà không cần dùng kháng sinh. Trong bối cảnh, việc phân biệt này giúp hạn chế tình trạng đề kháng kháng sinh đang ngày càng tiến triển.
